BONDI BEACH PUBLIC SCHOOL P&C MEETING – MINUTES
Tuesday 8 December 2009
BBPS Staff Room
7:20pm meeting called to order
APOLOGIES: Deb Contos
IN ATTENDANCE: Fiona Barron, Maria Hardy, Linda Henson, Brenda Miley, Scot Milson, Felicity Simpson, Zea Vargas, Susan Woodland
RECEIPT AND ADOPTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES: Accepted as true and accurate record.
MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MEETING: Nil.
REPORTS:
Treasurer:
The account balances are as follows:
- Canteen $12,485
- Main $14,009
- Uniform $23,663 ($3k in outstanding supplier invoices)
$15k from main account went to the purchase of two interactive whiteboards.
Investigated an EFTPOS machine for the uniform shop, however a machine is not cost effective measure due to the low volume of transactions and the bank fees imposed. There is an ATM in the Swiss Grand that is readily accessible.
Claire Milson to be approached to take over payment of the canteen wages, superannuation etc effectively sharing the Treasurer role.
President: School24, a company offering an online ordering system for canteens, demonstrated the product to Susan Woodland and Canteen Manager, Mercy Bush. The system is free and there are no fees attached and will be employed in the canteen in 2010. Seventy schools are currently operating the system.
The system requires the purchase of a computer with Internet access and a simple printer for printing labels. A printer that uses low-cost label stock is preferable. A desktop PC, pre-paid wireless modem and printer to be purchased from the canteen funds; laptops are more expensive and more prone to theft.
Committees
Fundraising: Deb Contos submitted a report on the children’s artwork fundraiser. A total of $1,577.50 was raised through the purchase of 276 calendars and 137 packs of cards; all classes placed orders with the average of 23 calendars and 11 packs of cards per class. Deb believes that this fundraiser is likely to be even more successful in subsequent years with many parents missing out due to late orders, and others commenting that they would have increased their card orders having seen the quality of the product.
Deb has offered to manage the fundraiser in 2010. Brenda Miley congratulated Deb for successfully managing the project.
Canteen: It has been difficult to attract volunteers to the canteen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and the Canteen Manager has struggled on some days to manage the busy lunchtime crowd. Maria Hardy stated that if needed the school could supply a teacher’s aid or office staff to assist rather than to have issues arise from the manager being overworked.
The ideal solution would be to get more volunteers on these days. Maria Hardy and Susan Woodland to discuss options with the Canteen Manager in 2010.
Sizzle: Scott Milson reported that the sizzles have gone well in 2009 and he is happy to take on the lead role again in 2010. Linda Henson offered to assist once she is replaced as Treasurer.
The barbeques are in good condition however overheads are creeping up and Scott requested that the committee consider price increases. The committee unanimously agreed to raise the price of water and soft drinks to $2.50.
Scott estimated the maximum earning potential for a Sunday sizzle at current prices is $2.6k.
Uniforms: The uniform shop has been run profitably and efficiently in 2009 and volunteers Denise Adair, Jane Cichero and Nadia Pashley are acknowledged for the excellent job they have done.
Principal:
Thank You Maria Hardy thanked the P&C for their contribution throughout the year and commented on the effect of the fundraisers on the school community; the excitement and enthusiasm engendered by the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day stalls, the City 2 Surf activities, Sizzles and Children’s Calendar Artwork.
She also acknowledged the good work of the committee, volunteers and staff in “turning around” the canteen and the uniform shop.
Sunday Markets Waverley Council granted a two-year trial of extended summer trading hours however there are a number of requirements including market operators ensuring the markets are smoke-free.
Saturday Farmers Market The DA to operate the markets has been resubmitted to Council. Rather than writing a submission to support the markets as the P&C, families to be encouraged to write in support of the markets as community members. (Susan Woodland to write a form letter to be distributed via Class Parents.)
Vegetables and produce from BBPS garden may be sold at the Farmers Markets.
Building Work The work is currently impacting on the markets and is taking up time during the week.
Executive Teachers Planning Day The teachers are endeavouring to plan the full-year ahead rather than a term ahead.
There will be an Easter Hat Parade for K-2 in 2010.
Pupil-free Days One day allocated to planning and programming, sharing curriculum ideas, and practical instruction on use of interactive white boards.
On the second day, Phillip Cam will be training the teachers in how to incorporate philosophy into their lessons.
Philosophy and Ethics etc
BBPS is not part of the trial to offer ethics as an alternative to scripture, but will apply to be part of a subsequent trial. The trial is for Stage 3 students only, however BBPS would like to incorporate philosophy into lessons for K-6.
Maria Hardy to investigate offering Buddhism as a scripture alternative.
Current Hall Suggestions made to carpet the existing hall and divide it into two discussion rooms. The hall should only be used for passive activities as noise travels to the administration offices below.
Miss Devine has requested mirrors and bars in the new hall. Zea Vargas to provide temporary mirrors.
Enrolments 2010 Eleven children, aside from Year 6, will be leaving this year. Throughout the year 40 children entered the school and 40 left reflecting the transient Bondi Beach population.
There are currently 48 children enrolled for Kindergarten 2010.
GENERAL BUSINESS
Wish List Committee reviewed the list of the students’ and teachers’ requests. They unanimously passed a motion to pay for the purchase of home readers for K-2 ($5k) and reading resources for K-6 ($10k).
The Wish List to be reconsidered once all items have been prioritised.
